Top 10 Non Sporting Trophies and Awards
Today there are many reasons why trophies and awards are handed out to people. Not only are there the more easily recognizable sports types such as the Olympic Gold, Silver and Bronze medals. There are other non sporting trophies and awards that can be presented to people as well. In this article we take a look at what we consider to be the Top 10 Non Sporting Trophies and Awards that are presented.
1. Academy Awards – More commonly referred to as the Oscars this miniature stylized human trophies are presented each year usually around March to those who are involved in the world of movies. The awards are handed out by the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and is now one of the oldest media award ceremonies to take place.
2. Hugo Awards – This award is named after the founder of the science fiction magazine Amazing Stories, Hugo Gernsbeck. It is presented annually and has been given out since 1955 to those who from the previous year have produced the best science fiction or fantasy work and is why we list it as part of the top 10 non sporting trophies and awards given in this list.
3. Victoria Cross – There are various medals that personnel who are part of the armed forces for the UK and Commonwealth Countries can achieve what is the highest decoration for these people. It is only given to those who have shown extreme bravery when fighting the enemy and since the first medal was presented in 1856 a further 1,353 individuals have been awarded this medial. Yet since the cessation of the 2nd World War only a further 13 medals have been presented to military personnel from both the UK and Australia.
4. Military Cross – This medal will be presented to military personnel in British or Commonwealth armed forces when they have carried out an act or acts of exemplary gallantry when against an enemy. There have been several times since 1979 when this actual medal has been awarded to military personnel posthumously.
5. George Cross – This non sporting trophy is one that can be awarded to both military personnel and civilians who live not only in the UK but are Commonwealth citizens also. It is the non combative counterpart of the Victoria Cross and will be presented to people who perform an act of bravery at any time.
6. Queens Gallantry Medal – This medal has been presented since 1974 and replaced the previous medals known as the British Empire for Gallantry, the Colonial Police Medal for Gallantry and the British Empire Medal for Gallantry. This like the other medals discussed is one that can be awarded when either a civilian or military person carries out an exceptional act of bravery.
7. BAFTA’s – This is the award presented like the Oscars each year and is for both film and television. The BAFTA award looks like a theatrical mask rather than a person and was designed by the American sculptor Mitzi Cunliffe in 1955.
8. BRIT Awards – Most often called the BRITS these are presented each year by the British Phonographic Industry to those involved in the world of music. This is a show that is watched by millions each year not only to see their favorite singers perform but to see how badly the show is presented.
9. Nobel Peace Prize – Of the top 10 non sporting trophies and awards presented annually this is one that is most well recognized. Every year the Novel Committee will create a short list of candidates who feel are deserving of this honour. Some of the most well known names to be presented with this particular prize bequeathed by the Swedish industrialist and inventor Alfred Nobel include Nelson Mandela.
10. The Man Booker Prize – This is one of the top 10 non sporting trophies and awards presented each year for the best original full length novel to be written in the English language. The candidates who can be presented with this prize must be a citizen either of Ireland, Zimbabwe or the Commonwealth of Nations. Even those who don’t get awarded with this prize are happy to be even nominated for it.
These trophies and awards are amongst the most famous in the world at the moment. There are some trophies and awards which are a bit more crazy, for example those a trophy is often given to winners of crazy golf competitions which can be a lot of fun – however be warned some people take their crazy golf competitions seriously!
