Should You Donate Your Car?
How often do you get into your vehicle to go to work or for other activities? It is often something we take for granted because we do own vehicles. Not everyone is so lucky, and can you imagine accomplishing all you do in a day without one? Even getting to work can end up being next to impossible. Thinking about those that are in such a predicament can encourage you to donate your care.
There is no shortage of wonderful non profit organizations out there willing to help people. They do want to assess barriers and then help them to find a way to be successful. One of the biggest barriers reported to these agencies though is transportation. If you don’t think it is hard, give up your own vehicle for a few days and try to get around without it. You will then appreciate the problems such individuals in our society are faced with.
You will feel great about donating your car to such organizations. Knowing you are responsible for helping someone gain the transportation they need is a wonderful experience. Sure, you could trade that vehicle in or sell it for a low dollar amount but you won’t get the same level of satisfaction from doing so.
Don’t forget that you can qualify for something in return when you donate your car to such organizations. Taxes can be very expensive and they continue to increase all the time. You can take a deduction on them though when you have donated in such a manner. That means you can reduce the amount you owe or you can increase the amount you get back when you file your income taxes.
How much you will get to deduct though is going to depend on many factors. Some of the charities sell the vehicles and that is the amount you get to deduct. Others will give you a price that they feel the vehicle is worth, but in most instances you can’t take the blue book value. Make sure you discuss your vehicle donation with your tax preparer so you can get the right amount of a deduction on them.
Always get some type of written documentation from the charity when you donate your car. Keep such information with your tax records in case you end up needing proof of such transactions later on. Many people out there do need a vehicle, and your kindness can help ensure they have it. Not all locations have public transportation and even in areas where it is available it isn’t always the practical solution.
