As a parent of a teen what would you do if you found out that you had a drugs and teenagers problem? Would you be like most parents who will feel extremely guilty and wonder why? Or would you turn around and ignore the problem? Well once you get past the guilt, you need to talk to them.
Drug use can lead to many bad decisions made by your teen. But you know it’s not as simple as telling them they can’t do it anymore. Especially if the drugs they are using are over the counter products. Yep cold medicines can be a favorite thing of many teens.
Examples that you set and that your kids see are going to come back to haunt you. Especially when they are things you don’t want your kids to do. It’s hard enough to keep your kids from experimenting at times, let alone when you have the things in the home already.
Smoking cigarettes is the same thing, as is drinking alcohol. If you do these things around you kids, do it moderately and always talk to them about it. Explain that when they get older they can do the same things, but not until then.
If you have prescription drugs at home, hide them where your teen can’t find them. No matter what they are, see teens don’t always care what it is, as long as they have a chance to feel a buzz. Seeing if your teen’s behavior changes you may even need to look at their room.
Teens that use drugs may hang out in their room a lot, or start to perform worse in school. But even a depressed teen may turn to drug use to get rid of pain. Getting your teen before it gets to be such a bad problem is a big help.
As parents you need to set the correct example for your kids. If you sit around and drink until your drunk or smoke pot, your kids will do the same thing. They learn by the example that they see every day of their lives.
Or you may have to seek out a rehab program for your teen. But sending them to rehab is a lot better choice than letting them continue. Because they can die from using too many drugs, so pay attention to the problem and work to solve it.
