Inferno: American returns to N.Y. from school in Rome to examine the hideous death of his sibling, and finds “sinister moms” wreaking paranormal chaos on both sides of Atlantic. Surreal, spellbinding shocker by Italian terror maestro Argento doesn’t make much sense, but it has a lot of style. Cast includes Leigh McCloskey, Irene Marvel, Sacha Pitoeff, Daria Nicolodi, Eleonora Giorgi, Veronica Lazar, and Alida Valli. (107 minutes,’84)
The Air I Breathe: Four overlapping, connect the dots story lines, based on a Chinese proverb and titled “Cheerfulness,” “Delight,” “Grief,” and “Love,” make up this mess of a film. Starts out promisingly, as a disgruntled office android Whitaker unintentionally figures out that a horse race has been fixed, then it inexplicably shits into a cartoon like train wreck. Cast includes Kevin Bacon, Julie Delpy, Brendan Fraser, Andy Garcia, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Clark Gregg, Emile Hirsch, Woodland Whitaker, Kelly Hu, Evan Parke, Taylor Nichols, Winner Rivers, and Jon Bernthal. Dennis The Menace: This is a movie version of the’50’s comic strip. With his parents out of town Dennis is staying with the neighbors Mr. and Mrs. Wilson. As usual Dennis is making life miserable for poor Mr. Wilson.
Chicken Every Sunday: Carefree turn-of the century Americana in reference to get-rich-quick hopeful Dailey and his clingy spouse. Cast includes George Seaton, Dan Dailey, Celeste Holm, Colleen Townsend, Alan Youthful, and Natalie Wood. (91 minutes,’48)
The Priests Wife: Hardly amusing blend of drama and humor with Loren as a disenchanted singer who imagines she could persuade pastor Mastroianni to acquire discharge from his promise of celibacy and wed her. Weightier addressing of this topic might be heard on talk shows. Cast includes Sophia Loren, Marcello Mastroianni, Venantino Venantini, Jacques Stany, Pippo Starnazza, and Augusto Mastrantoni. Belizaire the Cajun: Assante is well cast as a charismatic drug dealer in love with a Cajun woman who is the spouse of a prosperous Englishman. This is a choppy and somehow unsurprising drama in reference to the English prejudice and brutality toward the Cajuns in’th century Louisiana. Cast includes Armand Assante, Gail Youngs, Michael Schoeffiing, Stephen McHattie, Can Patton, and Nancy Barrett. (100 minutes,’86)
Rhapsody in Blue: Hollywood biography of George Gershwin is largely fiction, although comes off better than most other composer biographies, seizing Gershwin’s excitement for his work, and some of his central conflicts.
